I joined Caley Ocean Systems on August 22, 2022 before the business was acquired by THREE60 Energy, to begin the second year of my apprenticeship as an Electrical Technician. My first year in the waterworks industry provided me with fundamental skills in the electrical field.
I immediately noticed the strong sense of commitment and teamwork within the workshop, I first started working on the PileProp Control Systems, supporting technicians with tasks like installing cable trays and feeding cables.
My first on-site experience was working on a major nuclear project, this was crucial in expanding my understanding of the engineering side of Caley, due to the strong presence of engineers in the workshop and the constant communication with them. It was also a great opportunity for me to develop my electrical skills, including installing and testing various equipment. I initially assisted the technicians and engineers with tasks, before taking on responsibilities myself, ultimately completing the installation of electrical equipment independently.
I pursued my HNC in Electrical Engineering at Glasgow Clyde College, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world projects and achieving an A grade. I also began my SVQ3, documenting my work and progressing closer to completing my apprenticeship. Thanks to the support from within the business, I was able to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects, ultimately achieving an A grade.
One of our most promising projects of 2023/2024 was the Smart Green Shipping (SGS) FastRig Wind Propulsion Rigid Wing Sail System. I helped fit the wing with electrical and hydraulic systems and played a key role in installing the base frame. This project allowed me to gain a deep understanding of project development and teamwork.
I also worked on a Dive System Overhaul with our services team, where I expanded my skills in cable management, testing, fault finding, and cable routing. I carried out my first Factory Acceptance Test from start to finish, boosting my confidence in my work.
I was offered the chance to pursue my HND in Electrical Engineering, which I am currently working on. Recently, I had the chance to work in Barrow-in-Furness, installing the SGS FastRig Service on the Pacific Grebe, a nuclear transport ship. This experience broadened my understanding of Lloyd’s standards and offshore operations.
I’ve been given countless opportunities to grow professionally and personally in my time here. The company fosters a collaborative, innovative team environment where everyone strives to help each other improve. The support I received from within the business has been instrumental in my development, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects and achieve significant milestones in my career. I’ve built lasting friendships with colleagues, and the camaraderie extends beyond the workplace. As I approach the final months of my apprenticeship, I’m excited about the future and my transition to a full-time Electrical Technician role.
